Tips to visit nearby?

We are going to be spending a couple of days in Friedrichshafen later this month and have someone who will show us the sights there.

Prior to getting to Friedrichshafen, we will be coming from the Berchtesgaden area to drop off a rental car and have an extra day (later in our trip we will be visiting Munich).

Can someone recommend a neat town or %26quot;must see%26quot; near Friedrichshafen for an overnight? We are willing to take the trains somewhere if needed.

Thanks!

The loveliest town on Lake Constance ( www.bodensee-tourismus.com ) is Meersburg ( www.meersburg.de ) which has Germany%26#39;s oldest castle. You can also take a boat from it to the garden island of Mainau which sit close to it across the lake.

If you don%26#39;t drop off your car until the next day, I would recommend going to Sigmaringen ( www.sigmaringen.de ) which has an excellent castle/palace with an extensive armor weapon collection, and west of there is the idyllic gorge of the Danube River through the Swabian Alb ( www.schwaebischealb.de ) with lots of castles and palaces perches atop the cliffs. You could stay at the youth hostel at Wildenstein Castle ( www.jugendherberge-burg-wildenstein.de ).

Lindau is excellent. There are 2 parts, Lindau Insel is the island part, something like Meersburg with the medieval aspects but also a lovely harbor with good restaurants. Ferries to Austria 1/2 hr. to Brengenz (tho I do find Bregentz a bit boring).

A lovely town to sepnd a day.
