Berlin with teens

We%26#39;ll be spending a few days in Berlin in December and also want to celebrate New Year%26#39;s Eve there. I have a pretty good idea what to see in the tourist category, mostly indoor stuff (Reichstag, Museumsinsel, Mauer, one of the chateaus ...). But I%26#39;m also looking for ideas of something a bit more different that could interest my teenage daughters 12 and 14 then. Maybe a street with some funky shops (not too expensive)?

Are there certain walking tours that include more indoor time as well? Winter weather in Berlin can be really ugly!

Where would be a good place to be to celebrate New Year%26#39;s Eve and see the fireworks? I%26#39;m a bit worried about the crowds at the Reichstag/Brandenburger Tor and would probably prefer some other place.

I%26#39;ve ordered guide books but haven%26#39;t received any, yet, so the girls have no idea right now what they would like to do.

Kastanienallee and area has %26quot;funky%26quot; shops though not sure about the prices. Also Alte Schönhauser Strasse and area.

More mainstream but attractive is Potsdamer Arkaden shopping centre by POtsdamer Platz. It%26#39;s got a nice mix of shops incl. H %26amp;M, some nice cafes and is a size that is safe to let them move around alone.

Charlottenburg palace is well worth a visit. Potdsdam palaces are lovely as are the parks but not sure about midwinter. Potsdam Old Town is pretty too though.

My teenage boys aren%26#39;t much into shopping, but they did enjoy visitng KaDeWa -- Europe%26#39;s largest department store. The food floor was amazing! (It%26#39;s close to Kaiser Wilhelm church, too). The Jewish Musuem was also very interesting. Have fun!

No my teenage son isn%26#39;t really either. One trip (with two teenage girls as guests) he and his father were forced to kill time for 3 hours in Alexa shopping centre and they hated it.

However great ice-cream in Potsdamer Arkaden and the Viennese cafe on top floor has fantastic apple strudel! Saturn media store also of interest.

And it%26#39;s true Ka De food hall also fascinates.

There%26#39;ll also be Christmas Market still on Gendarmenmarkt which runs till New Year I believe. Christmas markets are good for shopping actually as well aseating and drinking. The Gendarmenmarkt one has more expensive handicrafts but there%26#39;s still a mix.
