On the day before we fly home from Frankfurt, we would like to visit and stay overnight in Wurzburg. Our flight is at 11:20--we can take a train that gets into Frankfurt Airport at 8:21, which would seem to be plenty of time. Does anyone think that this is a bad idea, and that we should instead be planning on staying Frankfurt the night before? Thanks.

At first glance it seems ok, but there is no cushion of time for the %26quot;what evers%26quot; that can happen when one travels. I have been on enough trains that broke down and we had to switch trains, or they sat for a while cause another train was delayed, or someone decided it was a good way to say good-bye by jumping in front of train.
I am not usually a pessimist, but when it comes to catching flights, I tend to err in the other direction of leaving plenty of time rather then just barely making it. Even when leaving from home here, I always plan on being at the airport 3 hours early and I am only 15 min. away! I guess I prefer to be calm and relaxed when a flight is ahead of me.

Thanks, Bonheim Girl. I understand. I think my inclination is to risk it, as I would like to make use of the last day, and my experience has been that it%26#39;s generally easier to get more out of a smaller place in a day than a city. Plus, I want to visit Wurzburg!

You are less likely to encounter train delays if you travel on an IC or ICE. These have priority over Regios. But, generally, German trains are punctual. I would run the risk of the overnight vstay in Wzbg.

We spent our last night in Würzburg last December before flying out of Frankfurt. It worked well. As someone mentioned there are IC and ICE trains for a no connection transfer.

Thanks, Gary and Treplow. Wurzburg it is!! And I agree on the German trains, they are just a bit more punctual than New Jersey Transit.....

I have also stayed in Wuerzburg and taken an ICE train into Frankfurt Airport in the early AM. I%26#39;m always thinking the worst possible scenario when planning my return flight, but the train station in Wuerzburg is modern and efficient, with many early AM departures, so I actually allowed more time than even necessary.
I didn%26#39;t have any days left on my German Rail pass, and simply bought the ticket the day before and scouted which track (Gleis) to go to in the AM, so I could just hop on board.
Wuerzburg is well worth as visit, too, with an attractive pedestrian zone, the Residenz and gardens, as well as a castle on the hill. There is also a very interesting pilgrimage church with a walk up to it through a very old but well-maintained garden/park. The Franconian wine is an extra plus...
