Train Travel/ Munich to Garmisch

Four Adults traveling from MUC Airport to Garmisch.

Is it possible to buy Bayern-Tickets at the airport or on line ? If the ticket is bought on line, do we have to select the scheduled time of the trip when purchase is made or can they be validated before we use them? One can not depend on flight arrival, etc. to know exactly the correct time for the trip.

Would the alternative plan be to buy the S1 or S8 tickets at the airport for each person and then buy the Bayern Ticket at the Hauptbahnhof?

Could you please advise what one does with luggage on the subway and on the train to Garmisch?

Do the trains pause long enough in the stations for one to gather luggage and exit the train. We plan to have one case each. Should we prepare for the stops before arriving?

Thank you for any replies. Sorry for the stupid questions but we want to be prepared.

Both is possible. Online will add a shipping fee of EUR 3,50 and makes also otherwise no sense.

But note: you need for 4 persons only 1 Bayern-Ticket (not several Bayern-Tickets).

If you buy it online through the DB timetable: yes - as this is the way the timetable works. Plays no role however in the result as this is a day ticket.

If you buy through this shop (in German only) you just have to select the date.

Not necessary. The Bayern Ticket will have the date it is good for on it.

Store it somewhere like everybody else.

No.

%26gt; Should we prepare for the stops before arriving?

Yes. No problem with a S-Bahn train. The many doors make up one quarter of the whole train length.

The next stop is announced and shown on displays. Stops like the airport or the main train station are also announced in English.

I think, to clarify, you need to know that the S bahn train is basically a rapid transit train with lots of wide-opening sliding doors. You may need to stand by your baggage beside the doors (if you%26#39;re concerned about it!) if you cannot lift it up to the luggage racks above the seats. If the train is fairly empty you may of course be able to put luggage right by your seat without attracting dirty looks. It won%26#39;t be a problem.

On main line trains, there are many fewer doors (usually, although some are now like the S Bahn) and there may be space for luggage. On mainline trains, the stops will be longer than on S bahn, and often the train pauises for several minutes at Garmisch.

Thank you so much, these answers are very helpful. We are traveling to Garmisch on 10/09/2009 and will be returning to Munich 19//09/2009. We understand this will be during Octoberfest. If we remain in the Marienplatz area near the museums, etc., will we be able to avoid the larger crowds? We do not fly out until 21/09/2009 and will be spending two nights at the Kempenski Hotel at the airport. Any suggestions to make this plan work smoothly? Should we check our luggage in Munich and do our sight seeing on our arrival, or would we be better to travel on to hotel, check in and then return to town?. Of course we plan to spend all day on Sunday in Munich. We have been to Munich before.

Let me make sure I understand your plan: Arrive from Garmisch at Munich Hbf. (Main satation). Either check your luggae at the Hbf., or conmtinue on the S-Bahn to the airport, check into your hotel there, and returen to town.

If this is correct, I personally would first check into the hotel and then return to town. You can stay in town as long as you want to then and leave from any S-Bahn/U-Bahn station. All you lose is the time R/T to the airport. You can do all this on the same Bayernkarte (Bavarian ticket) you bought in Garmisch.

On your return into town, get off at the Marienplatz S Bahn/U-Bahn station if you just want to wander around the city center, or change to an U-Bahn that gets you closer to the Theresienwiese station, (Oktoberfest Wies%26#39;n), where the beer tents are.

Thanks, makes perfect sense. We had not thought about being able to return to AP without going back to where the luggage has been checked.
