Getting into Munich

We are travelling to Munich in September and would normally get a taxi from the airport to the Hotel. However, we are told that this is in excess of 60 euros. Unfortunately we have never used the train system and need some help. We are staying at the Hotel Bavaria Gollierstr. What trian would we get, how do we buy tickets, is there a ticket guard on the train etc etc, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, it´s about 50 km from the airport to the city.

You can enter an address as the starting point or destination.

%26gt;What trian would we get,

S-Bahn S1 or S8, plus whatever you need to get from the S-Bahn stations to the hotel (subway/tram/bus...)

%26gt;how do we buy tickets,

You walk up to the ticket machine, choose Partner Tageskarte Gesamtnetz (minigroup day card for whole MVV area, 18 €) and buy the ticket.

%26gt; is there a ticket guard on the train etc etc

??? What do you mean with a ticket guard?

|||

S1 or S8 from airport to Hauptbahnhof; where change to U4/ U5 to Theresienwiese. Buy ticket at airport- either machine or counter.

Get partner karte gesamtnetz (valid for up to 5 people whole day, on all transport within Munich.)

No guard or inspection gate, and you must validate your ticket in the blue machine before travel.

It is extremely easy once you see it.

Many thanks for both your replies

The subway/train system is easy to use. But be advised that you may need to haul your luggage up several flights of steps.

Perhaps another poster can comment on the facilities at the station you will use.

|||

there is always -by law- an elevator, AFAIK. And I think there is always at least one exit with an escalator to the surface.

|||

The S-Bahn and U-Bahn systems in Munich are rather new, started in the 70s/80s of the last century. All their stops are barrier free. This can however mean that there is a lift only at one exit side of a station.

Munich%26#39;s train system is super easy, believe me. There%26#39;s even a Brit flag for English translation (why it%26#39;s not an American flag is bollocks :) Plus, most Germans speak English, and would be glad to assist if asked.

|||

yep, the S %26amp; U are excellent, very user friendly, it%26#39;s the fastest option.

%26gt; Why it%26#39;s not an American flag is **** Plus most Germans speak English.....%26gt;

It%26#39;s not an American flag because people speak English not American, you said so yourself.

Not the George cross then? :-)

Thank you all for your comments, they ar eapprecaited. I have been told that if you fly with Lufthansa they run a shuttle bus to the centre of Munich, is this true? has anyone heard or used it?

%26gt; I have been told that if you fly with Lufthansa they run a shuttle bus to the centre of Munich, is this true?

True: there is a Lufthansa Airport Bus from the Airport to the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station)

Not true: it is not run by Lufthansa, but by Autobus Oberbayern

Not true: it is not only for Lufthansa passengers. Anybody can use it. Not even a price difference if you%26#39;re a Lufthansa passenger or not.

This bus is however more expensive than using public transport.

Lufthansa Airport Bus is EUR 10,50 per person.

MVV partner day ticket is EUR 18,00 for 2-5 persons.

Travel time is nearly identical. But as the bus is using the roads you may experience delays during the rush hours.

If you are using the Lufthansa Airport Bus you will still need an MVV ticket to get to the U-Bahn station Theresienwiese or use a taxi.

And with the MVV day ticket you can of course travel after checking into your hotel to the old city. MVV day tickets are valid till 6am next day.
