Our family will be in Frankfurt on new years day 2010. Will any muesems or attractions be open as it is a public holiday? I presume all shops will be closed.

There is no general rule on this. And on many museum websites the information is not yet available. Basically you have to look this up for the individual museums. Early December this information should be available.
More (all) museums will be closed on the 31st. December.
Many maybe also closed on the 1st. January. I%26#39;ve also seen that museums open later on this day.
