Things to do around Schleiden-Gemund

Hi

I am going with my family for a week to the RCI resort, Gemuender Ferienpark Salzberg, in May this year. The resort itself does not seem to have too many recreational activities. I will have two kids, 6 %26amp; 9, and my parents (72 %26amp; 65) accompanying my wife %26amp; me. What things can we do for a week? Suggestions for sightseeing (for the adults) %26amp; entertainment (for the children) would be welcome. I should have a car with me during this time.

Thanks

Saw your post, we are going to same resort next week with 6 %26amp; 7 year old. Do you have any feedback on resort and/or advice on activities that your children enjoyed?

Thanks for your time.

Not sure my first reply went through--disgregard if it did.

Hi

We stayed at this resort for a week. The resort is great with very helpful staff. The country side around is very beautiful.

You have to have a car because there is nothing very close by. But with a car, the supermarket %26amp; restaurants are within a 5 minute drive.

We did day trips to various places. I would recommend Duisburg (Legoland %26amp; a great Zoo with Dolphinarium), Phantasialand (Great amusement park), Monschau (Sunday market), Cologne (Cathedral %26amp; Chocolate Museum) and the open air museum at Kommern (the kids really liked this as well as we did) We went to Sealife at Konigswinter but did not like it so much. The Botanical museum at Bonn was not bad.

We cannot say enough about RCI and Gemund!! We thought the staff was excellent and LOVED the town. We had a 1 bedroom and it was very roomy with a split bath (1 room shower/sink, the other the toilet). We also had a first floor patio with patio set for outdoor dining.

We had wifi in our room and very nice furnishings. TV, DVD player, and all movie rentals free. Everything you needed in the kitchen including wine opener, microwave, dishwasher, etc.

We appreciated that Gemund was off the beaten path (not touristy) and shopped in the various local stores for meats, breads and wines to take back to the condo to cook.

That being said, I think you have to have a car to enjoy it:

Within 20 min drive--

* We like being outdoors and hiking and were very happy with the Eifel forest, swimming, boat ride. The park office downtown Gemund is great with maps, etc.

* The wildlife park is fabulous--more hawks, falcons, eagles than I have ever seen. Deer eat right out of your hand, wild pigs...super!

* Lead mine - over 1 mile underground tour. Very well done and the kids actually were interested the entire time. There is also a museum there that is nice. If you have extra time their are hiking trails in the woods. Be sure to take a coat though--65 degrees underground!

* Walking downtown Gemund shopping and along the river. They also have bike trails and horseback riding.

* Alpine Slide. We didn%26#39;t go, but wished we would have.

A bit further:

* Cologne. Chocolate Museum--with restaurant for lunch on the Rhine. The park on the Rhine (HUGE)--I can%26#39;t remember the name, but our 6%26amp;7yr old loved the 100 meter long rope course (had to pay for parking, but park was free), they also had a water area and a beach.

* Eltz Castle--very nice--about 40 min drive. Very reasonable and well done. There is a nice restaurant there.

* Uber-ring -- might have spelled that wrong, but the race track. We tried to get on with our car, but there was an accident just after we got there and they closed the track. You have to go in the evening. During the day and on weekends they use it for test cars or races---which we went back on a weekend and saw a race. Great to see all the cool cars and bikes.

Let us know how you liked it!

* Uber-ring

Nürburgring

new there (Summer 2009):

ring°werk

with the ring°racer, the fastest roller coaster on the planet (in 2,7 seconds from 0 to 217 kph).

You must not go with a rental car on the Nordschleife however! Gives enormous trouble with the rental company if something happens.
