must do day trip from cologne?

Can you all tell me what your favorite day trips from Cologne are? I am looking for small town cultural experience.

For a city with a small town feel and a most diverse cultural scene, I would go with Bonn:

Aachen is also an amazing place, deeply steeped in history:

i used 2 live in cologne,

my favourite daytrips were

Maastricht in the Netherlands

and Ahrweiler. both lovely

and about 1hr away from Cologne

by car.

I will agree with the Aachen and Maastricht suggestions and will add something. Between Maastricht and Aachen there is an American Cemetery in Margraten.

If you haven%26#39;t been to an American Cemetery in Europe it is something worth seeing. Link to information on the site below. 8300 American soldiers buried here.
