Somebody told me that the castle%26#39;s façade is hidden due to restoration work. Is it true?
Apart from that, I%26#39;m going to Munich for the second time. My sister%26#39;s never been there, though. Shall we tour the Royal castles or visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber instead? Both seem beautiful places and I can´t decide. Thanks!

I was at Neuschwanstein in Feb and the castle seemed OK, no work being done. If I had to take someone for first trip I would do Munich and south to Neuschwanstein, Wieskirche, Ettal, Oberammergau, Mittenwald, Garmisch, and as much of that area as possible.

We were just there last week and yes, an entire facade of the castle is under renovation %26amp; covered with fencing/screening material. It%26#39;s a little disappointing but we are still glad we went. Never been to Rothenburg.

howdy folks... so who is correct? the virginian expert or the above poster?? one says there is no construction, one says its covered... when i was there a few months ago the entire side of the castle facing the bridge was covered... who is correct????

A matter of someones viewpoint(s).
If you don%26#39;t go up to St. Mary%26#39;s Bridge you may even not notice that the rear facade is under renovation %26amp; covered with fencing/screening material.

We were also there last week, and definitely one whole side - the side visible from Mary%26#39;s Bridge- is covered with tarp. Actually, it did not spoil the photos as much as you might think, and, as the previous poster mentioned, if you don%26#39;t go up the hill to the bridge you probably won%26#39;t even notice. You can%26#39;t see the tarp from the front/main entrance, but from the inside in some of the rooms, you can watch the workmen working right outside the window. I would def do the castle anyhow, and take the walk up to Mary%26#39;s Bridge just to get the famous panorama view. It is spectacular and the scaffolding did not ruin it for us. We also went to Rothenburg and loved it. Picturesque medieval town - Both Neusch. and Rothen. would require a full day trip from Munich. If you must choose, I would do the castles: Hohenschwangau and Neufsch. in the morning (reserve your tickets in advance) and in the afternoon, either ride the tram from Garminsch to the top of Zugspitz, or do Linderhoff if you want another of Ludwig%26#39;s castles (Be sure to see the Grotto). We had a rental car; don%26#39;t know if this is feasible on public transportation. Have fun!

And Dachau is a must see! You can either drive or take public trans.

Thank you all for for your helpful advice!

Abalada is correct.
The side of the castle that can be seen from the Marienbrucke is under renovation and has scaffolding around it, but only that side of the castle is impacted. From all other angles you might not even see the scaffolding. [That is what it looked like in May when I was there.]
