A visit to Heidelberg between romantic road and the rhine?

Hello,

Im planning to arrive in Munich and visit a few spots on the romantic road. From there I have plans to visit the Rhine and Mossel areas. Does it make sense to stop for a night in Heidelberg?

My plan would be something like this...

2 nights Munich

1 night Fussen

1 night Colmberg Castle and 1 night Rothenburg

(Thinking about Wurzburg day trip but unsure)

1 - free night - perhaps Heidelberg

2 - night Cochem

2 - night Rhine

we will have a car and end our trip in Frankfurt. Does this route make sense given the drive and stops? should anything be moved around to make the most sense of driving directions?

Thanks

From Rothenburg, Heidelberg is directly on one possible autobahn route. From Wuerzburg it is a slight detour by autobahn, as you will have to head SW to Heilbronn before heading west and north to Heidelberg.

If you want to see Heidelberg, by all means visit it, seeing the palace will only take a few hours out of your day. Otherwise, it makes little difference whether you visit it or not, there are plenty of places along the Romantic Road or along the Rhine or places in between you could spend your extra time.

If you decide to visit Heidelberg and want to overnight there, from Rothenburg I would rake the A7 autobahn the short distance south to the A6 autobahn west, and exit for Schwaebisch Hall to see just to its east Comburg (also called Grosscomburg) Monastery (in www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de ), an unique walled fortified medieval monastery, just a great place to visit. Get back on the A6, and then at Heilbronn take the road along the Neckar River to Heidelberg. Bad Wimpfen ( www.badwimpfen.de ) is a nice medieval town, and there are many castles, vineyards and pleasant towns along this route.

Heidelberg isn%26#39;t really all that special in my book and is out of the way. If you%26#39;ll be in Rothenburg and at Colmberg, I%26#39;d spend the extra time in nearby Bamberg and/or Nuremberg, both of which have some very nicely preserved medieval centers and interesting sights, and skip Würzburg and Heidelberg, not because they%26#39;re bad places, but because the others are just more attractive and more interesting.
