going to munich first time...

My husband and I are going to Munich in August. We fly into Munich at 10:ooam and then need to get to the city center to our hotel. We need to be in Salzburg by the next night (before sunsets) We want to know since we have limited time what is possible to do? The first day in I assume go to the city center. We will probaly be tired and end up at the Beer gardens :) Hofbauer house ...Anything we need to see also? The next day we want to go to Dachau in the morning. I thought take the train there and my husband wanted to rent a car instead and maybe head into the austrian alps before getting to Salzburg before dark. We for sure are doing Dachau and I told him this is way too much but he obsessed with the autobahn and seeing some scenary. We are going to vienna after two nights in Salzburg for 5 nights. Any suggestions?

Munich airport to downtown is a breeze---go to the center of Terminal 1 and buy a S-bahn ticket, and then take the escalator downstairs and hop on the S-8 to downtown. Getting to Dachau is tougher-- the nearest S-bahn station is probably Dachau-Stadt but it is still quite a hike. Might be better to rent a car and drive there--especially if you are driving to Salzburg. Problem-- most car rental companies let you pick up and drop off your car at any of their offices in Germany--- but if you are going to Salzburg and Vienna-- there may be a big dropoff charge (if they allow it at all).

Munich to Salzburg on the autobahn is an easy drive, just a couple of hours, and it is in the foothills of the German Alps, mostly rolling terrain with some mountains off in the distance until you get close to Salzburg. Then you can swing a few kilometers south to Bad Reichenall or Berchtesgagen for some really

Another nice thing to see on the way between Munich and Salzburg is Ludwig II%26#39;s version of Versailles, Herrenchiemsee, on an island in the Chiemsee.

I definitely recommend a visit to the ice caves near Werfen (nice castle too) south of Salzburg, an unforgettable experience.

The problem is that you are trying to do way too much in way too short a time. You will have only time to barely scratch the surface of all the excellent things that you could do. I would cut down that time in Vienna and spend more time in Salzburg, it%26#39;s a lovely town with nice cultural attractions, a lovely ambience in the old town, and sits literally on the doorstep of both the German and Austrian Alps.

Well, you won%26#39;t see much of Munich in basically just one afternoon and evening, but you can try to make the most out of it. Arriving at the airport at 10am you should be at your hotel somewhere just before noon. From there you could take a first little walk though the pedestrian area between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz, then on to Viktualienmarkt and have lunch at the beergarden there. After lunch you could walk past St. Jakobs Platz, Rindermarkt, Marienplatz to Odeonsplatz (if you like churches you can visit about half a dozen on the way), then through Hofgarten to the Haus der Kunst and into the Englischer Garten. There another beergarden stop at the chinese tower before you head back to your hotel. In the evening the HofbrÀuhaus is probably your destination of choice :-)

If you the next day, you should drive to Dachau early in the morning, then take the autobahn towards Salzburg. En route you should stop at Prien on the Chiemsee and take the short boat trip to visit Herrenchiemsee castle, you won%26#39;t regret it.

Check this Forum, you%26#39;ll find lots of information on all the places mentioned.

Thank you everyone. I never posted on a forum and it is pretty amazing how wonderful it all is! Great info! We are staying at a hotel right next to the main train station in Munich. My thinking was if we could not rent a car we could train it with our luggage from airport to central train station in Munich and walk with luggage to hotel since it is right a across the street and or would it be easier to go on the hotel shuttle (le meridian) not sure if they have one? Will have to write the hotel. If the enxt morning we take that train to dachau and leave luggage at hotel and then spend half day there and then train it back-any stops we can do that way and come back into munich by dinner time to train it to salzburg from the central train station in munich. I think the renting of a car and then dropping it in salzburg (during salzburg festival) is absolutely insane! I would love to see the scenary but it feels soo rushed. We booked all our hotels and we would like to stickw ith this itinerary. So what is the suggestion if we didnt have a car? With the same timeline? Thank you all again!

You%26#39;re welcome!

Well, first thing: don%26#39;t rent a car at the airport! Just take the S-Bahn, S1 or S8 whichever leaves first to Hauptbahnhof (Central train station), from there you can walk to your hotel, it%26#39;s just a short walk through the station and across the street (have a look at a map though, the station is quite big).

From your hotel you can either walk to the Marienplatz area (20 to 30 minutes slow walking) or take the S-Bahn for 2 stops.

If your husband insists on renting a car, you should check prices with Avis, Europcar, Sixt, they have offices in the train station. The driving to Dachau and to Salzburg is a piece of cake, don%26#39;t worry. The only thing to check is probably the price for the one way rental to Austria.

Doing it all by train is also feasable and probably cheaper too, but you will have the hassle of sticking to timetables, getting to stations and not be able to stop en route to do some sightseeing... The most interesting stops beeing between Munich and Salzburg and not between Munich and Dachau.

Hope that helps you in your planning.

ok if we do rent a car (i guess from the train station the morn we leave for dachau or maybe the car rental people can pick us up from our hotel tot he car rental location?? and want to drive from dachau then to Salzburg and have 7 hours to spare Where should we stop on the way from Dachau to salzburg? We would love to see mountains and such but obviously our day would be like. pick up car rental 9:00am 10-1:00noon in Dachau and then drive towards Salzburg and get there before sunset which is like 8:30ish. (we would have to do a little on the autobahn-so we can experience that :) Will it be difficult to drive into Salzburg? It is during their festival etc. We will return the car the next morning so we basically have the car 24 hours. Thanks!

Dachau is about 180Km from Salzburg with 90% of the distance on the Autobahn (A99 and A8). At an average speed of 120Km/h it should take you less than 2 hours to get there. Prien at the Chiemsee is about 60Km before Salzburg and is right off the Autobahn. You should stop there, take the boat ride and see the castel on the island in the middle of the lake with the mountains as back drop. Then continue on to Salzburg, leave your luggage at the hotel and maybe drop off the rental car if you%26#39;re not intending to keep it during your stay in Salzburg (why pay the parking fee for the night?).
