We are a family of four with kids%26#39; ages 8 and 11. In August, we will be in Munich for 7 nights. We want to see Neuschwanstein and Salzburg. Does anyone have any suggestions about whether to day trip or to stay overnight at either Salzburg or Fussen? I%26#39;m thinking that a longer stay would allow us to spend half a day bicycling around Fussen or Salzburg. Any recommendations would be most appreciated!

Hi JaneinBoston,
My personal rule of thumb is that, if transportation is less than two hours in one direction, then it%26#39;s a day-trip. Remember that it%26#39;ll take you some time to pack up (especially with young children) and check out, then to check in again and unpack. So it only makes sense to go through all that and make the move if the transport is two hours or longer.
Have fun!

I would always overnight in either place. The ambience of the old town in Salzburg is wonderful, something you probably won%26#39;t get much of the feel for on a quick day trip. Actually, several nights would be better, Salzburg has a lot of interesting cultural things as well as literally sitting on the doorstep of both the German and Austrian Alps. The whole family would enjoy the bishop%26#39;s water garden at the palace where he played tricks on his guests with water, a tour of the salt mine from either the German or Austrian side, an unforgettable visit to the ice caves above Werfen (nice real castle too), and a boat trip on the Koenigssee, one of the most scenic lakes in Germany. All of these things are fun to do.
On the way to Salzburg from Munich is another of Ludwig II%26#39;s palaces, his version of Versailles, Herrenchiemsee, on an island in the Chiemsee.
Personally, I wouldn%26#39;t stay in Fuessen but in nearby Hohenschwangau for the excellent close-up views of lit-up by night Neuschwanstein Palace, possibly from your bed. We always like staying at the Villa Jaegerhaus, click on my name for my review, and another reviewer has some nice photos of this excellent small hotel. After the day-tripping tourist hordes disappear, it will become much more pleasant in Hohenschwangau. There is also a summer bob sled run (Rodelbahn) nearby, and of course you can hike in the Alps. or feed the swans on the small lake nearby.
It%26#39;s summer, enjoy the countryside!!!!

I just returned from both places last week. A day trip with younger kids is really pushing it. You won%26#39;t have enough time to relax and take in the atmosphere of either place unless you spend a night. We stayed in Mittenwald, about 45 minutes drive to Neuschwanstein, which is an authentic German village much less crowded with tourists.

Thank you all. This is very helpful. What do you think about a night near Neuschwanstein and then going from there to Salzburg. Does the Bavaria ticket work for travel from Fussen to Salzburg and how long is the trip?
|||
A night near Neuschwanstein would be a good idea I think, and Salzburg is really worth spending 2 or 3 days especially you go with kids. The Bavaria ticket works to Salzburg but i%26#39;m afraid you might have to pay some extra fee on the way. The trip is about 90mins. Viel Spaß!!
|||
P.S. 90mins is for the ICE, it could take 2hours if it%26#39;s a slow train. :)

As long as you travel through Bavaria (probably via Munich) and not Austria to go between Fuessen and Salzburg a Bavaria ticket will be fine. It covers public transportation in Bavaria, but not in Salzburg as it is outside of Bavaria. Train information can be found at www.bahn.de , and change to English near the top of the page. For using the Bavaria day ticket, select only local transportation. Also note that I have spelled the name of Fuessen correctly, it is that or Füssen, not Fussen.
|||
Thank you so much. I also like the idea of staying in Hohenschwangau instead of Fuessen.
|||
The trip from Fussen to Salzburg via Munich is almost 5 hours, definitely something to keep in mind.
I did both places as easy day trips from Munich. The trains to Salzburg are frequent and the ride is about 2 hours. (remember you have to take %26quot;local connections only%26quot; if you%26#39;re on the Bavaria ticket). The train and bus to the castle is about 3 hours, I think.
If I had to overnight in either Hohenschwangau or Salzburg, I%26#39;d stay overnight in Salzburg.

You%26#39;re right. The ride from Fuessen to Salzburg is too long by train. We%26#39;ll have to do two separate trips. Based on the wonderful advice here, I think that we%26#39;ll stay in Hohenschwangau and use that as a base to see the castles one day and then make our way over to G-P and Mittenwald the next day (by bus to Reutte and then train). I%26#39;ve read that the train ride from Reutte to Mittenwald is lovely, but maybe it will be easier to rent a car for a day?...
