Train or Bus

I am trying to see whether it is possible to do the following by train or bus, and which is more efficient:

1. from Nuremberg to Rothenburg odT

2. from Rothenburg odT to Fussen, preferably being able to make 1-2 stops along the way in smaller towns.

Very reluctant to drive.

Should we just join the so-called Romantic Road bus trip (but the stops are too short unless one gets back on the bus 24 hours later)?

Or give up and join a group tour?

All advice much appreciated.

You can do these trips easily by train.

1) Nuremberg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

VGN TagesTicket PLUS EUR 14,20

A mini group day ticket. Valid for up to 6 persons, but only 2 of them must be 18 or older.

2) Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Füssen

Bavaria Ticket EUR 28,00

A mini group day ticket. Valid for 2-5 persons.

This ticket is valid:

Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day

Both are local public transport tickets. They cover

- regional trains (RB,RE,ALX)

- S-Bahn

- U-Bahn (metro)

- trams

- buses (city and regional buses)

IC/EC or ICE trains or the Romantic Road Bus are not covered.

DB timetable

From: Nuremberg

To: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

To: Fuessen

Forgot:

Select at the DB timetable as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot; if you want to use the above mentioned tickets. Just to be on the safe side. Albeit there are anyway few connections on this routes not covered by these tickets.

Thanks so much.

Can you tell me that these trips are covered by the German Rail Pass or are they separate.

Also, if we buy German Rail Pass or tickets on the bahn website, will they actually post it to us in Australia??

Thanks

Yes. A German Rail Pass covers all trains. But it does not cover U-Bahn (metro), trams and buses. At least for these 2 trips definitely not the better deal.

Yes. Shipping fee is EUR 3,50. DB asks for 7 workdays to ship outside of Europe.

Again, makes for the ticket I suggested no sense. You can buy them as well on spot. They are always available. And as these routes are anyway nearly exclusively served by regional trains you can%26#39;t reserve seats anyway.

Hi

so should we just buy a German rail pass for the days that we are taking the major (non-regional) routes (such as Berlin to Nuremburg and Hedelberg to Koln)

AND separately purchase a regional ticket for Nuremburg to Rothernburg and then to Fussen?

Thanks for your advice, I really appreciate it.

If you want to use fast trains, yes. But compare the pass price with the prices of single tickets before.

Otherwise there are offers for the whole Germany similar to the Bavaria Ticket (valid only on regional trains), sich as Quer-durchs-Land ticket (34 € for 1st person, 5 € for 2.-5. persons) that allow you to save a lot of money by using slow local trains. It´s as usual speed vs. cost decision.

This will make sense as you don´t save a lot of time on this stretch using fast trains.
