We will be renting a car for 2 weeks in mid September. We are flying into Munich and leaving for Paris from Cologne by train 2 weeks later. Our plans so far are:
1. spend 2 days in Munich(Octoberfest will have not yet started)
2. spend 2 nights in Fussen. We will spend one day at the castles and 1 day around Mittenwald.
3. From Fussen we are planning to drive the Romantic Road, staying at Rothenburg der Tauber for 2 nights.
Question 1: We would like to make sightseeing stops between Fussen and Rothenburg. We plan to stop at Augsburg. What else should we not miss?
Question 2: Since we will be stopping to sightsee, should we plan on staying overnight somewhere between Fussen and Rothenburg? If so, what would be a good place?
Question 3. After Rothenburg, we are considering driving to Nuremburg and/or Bamburg and then to Wurzburg. Can we do this in a day? Someone has told us there is a very pretty road in this area, but I am not sure what or where it is. We would then spend one night somewhere along this route - maybe Wurzburg.
The next six days or so we will spend sightseeing in the Rhine/Neckar/Mosel area but we haven%26#39;t started to map that out yet.
I would really appreciate feedback.

Question 2. Consider staying at Katzenstein Castle ( www.burgkatzenstein.de only in German) which is fairly close to Noerdlingen (the only walled city of the RR where you can walk the entire walls) of the Romantic Road. The best preserved Staufer-age castle from the 1100s, and they also do medieval meals. If you stay there, see the lonely Roman road just to its north, and also the lovely church at the monastery in Neresheim. And if you want to see how lovely a palace can be without any tourists around, drive around the Thun and Taxis Palace by Dischingen, also nearby.

Re: Question 2: Fuessen to Rothenberg is 2 hours 11 minutes driving. So even with stopping, you don%26#39;t necessarily need to spend the night. Look in the %26quot;Romantic Road%26quot; forum for ideas on sites to see between Fuessen and Rothenberg.
Re: Question 3: Rothenburg to Nurnberg is an hour and 10 minute drive. Nurnberg to Wurzberg is an hour 15 minutes. Definitely doable in a day.
A good website for drivers is http://www.viamichelin.com. It will give you routes and times.
We were in Germany in September in %26#39;07 - a perfect time to visit. You should definitely plan some time on the Rhine and the Mosel on your way to Cologne. Try %26#39;new wine%26#39; only available in the fall.
Enjoy your trip. (We leave for ours in 3 days!)

That 2:11 driving time is not by the Romantic Road but by the A7 autobahn. Using the Romantic Road will be somewhat longer distance-wise and much longer time-wise because it is for the most part a two-lane highway, and it also passes through a city, Augsburg, and also smaller towns along the way.
There is no real need to drive the Romantic Road unless you are going to stop in some places along it to see the sights. The road itself is an ordinary German two lane highway, not romantic, it%26#39;s some of the places along it that some people might describe as romantic.
I don%26#39;t really want to get into places to stop along it, I believe that htese should be personal choices, but you might consider the castle at Harburg. Hotels, restaurants, tourist offices, museums, etc. should have free booklets on the Romantic Road and its sights, just pick one up near your first stop on it. It will describe the sights and YOU can choose what interests YOU. You could spend over a week doing this drive if you stopped to see all the things along and near it.
