Just started planning for my birthday gift- tickets to the F1 race Friday July 10, 2009- Sunday July 12, 2009.
We have been booked at the Hilton Cologne. Can any local experts give some advise on the practicalities and logistics to get to/from Nurburgring for the 3 days of events? Any tips on what I should focus my trip planning on to make this as easy as possible?

During big events at the Nürburgring there are shuttle buses from Koblenz Hbf (main station) to the Nürburgring. Koblenz is 1 hour by train from Cologne (following the Rhine upstream).
Or you rent a car.

Abalada,
Thank you for the information. As I look at the map, it looks as if it would be a 1 hr train ride, and possibly another hour to shuttle, assuming 15 minutes to locate and line up. A 2 hour trip each way. Does this sound about right?
My problem with renting a car is parking at the hotel and then traffic on race day. However, we want to attend 3 days and 4 hours of commute time is %26quot;time consuming%26quot;.

I am going to post again in hopes that someone currently in Cologne might see some alternatives to the earlier posts.
My hope is that a local bus company will offer direct scheduled charter service to the track for the 3 days.
Anyone have any new thoughts?

Why not stay on the other side of the Eifel mountain range, in the Mosel area. Trier is only one hour from the Ring.
|||
Unfortunately the hotel was booked as part of a package, so I don%26#39;t have an option.

Thought I would bump this one more time before we leave. Anyone locals see any advertising for German Grand Prix Shuttle buses from Cologne?
|||
Did you check with your hotel ?

Or check with the organisers.

The track provides some accomodations, but I am hoping to travel from direct to and from Cologne as opposed to train/ shuttle they offer which is close to 2 hours each segment x 3 days.
I am checking with hotel as well as the Virtual Tourist forum... I have at least identified someone else looking at the same logistics.

Thought I would follow up in case someone is interested in 2011- Ended up with no other non driving option than the train to Koblenz and shuttle.
Shuttles in Koblenz would %26quot;load and go%26quot; at both ends, so we focused on being early and the transport was pretty well organized. Others who got on later buses said it was 2 hours to get to the track after traffic built.
We left as soon as the the trophies were handed out, and boarded a bus about a KM away, pulled straight out into traffic and got away very nicely post race. They even closed soem eoad we too to busses only.
Had a blast...
