Just wondering if we can walk or take a cheap and quick train/bus ride just to cross the border and look around a bit. Or should we save all of our time for exploring Trier (as we have just one day there)?

Trier needs in itself more than a day. Luxembourg is a nice city but IMO not as interesting. And while Germany is a smll country compared to USA it is still defintiely walking ditance to the border.
Besides, do you really believe that the countryside beyond the border will be any different from the German countryside close by? OK, road signage will slightly change...

I really didn%26#39;t believe it would look different once we crossed the border--just an opportunity for the kids to say they%26#39;ve been in one more country. We%26#39;ll be in Cochem for the weekend (coming by train Saturday morning and leaving by train Sunday evening), seeing Burg Eltz and the Mosel area, and thought about adding on Trier the 2nd day. Or are there better ways to allot our limited time?

If you want to go to Luxembourg, then why not take a train to Luxembourg city. The town is interesting and the children might enjoy a tour of the casements. If you drive, you could also visit the American Cemetary in Hamm (just to the city%26#39;s east)where General Patton is buried, and perhaps stop and visit Echternach on the border with Germany and its old abbey. There%26#39;s a few castle ruins along the way and some fairly nice scenery. It really matters little where you choose to visit, you%26#39;ll just be seeing some different things that day. What I would not try to do is cram too many things into a day. The country of Luxembourg is only about 10km (6 miles) from Trier, but don%26#39;t waste your valuable short time walking there!!! I doubt that you%26#39;ll notice too much difference when you cross the river.

I would rather suggest visiting Trier´s Roman monuments if you have a limited time. It was for a while the capital of the Roman Empire (West) and tehre is quite a lot of 2000 year old things around (such as the Porta Nigra, the bath ruins, the basilica...)

It is 12 km from Trier to Wasserbillig first village across the Mosel ad that is 3 hours walking, it would be a very nice bicycle ride !
