We are a family of 4 that are hoping to travel to Bavaria and Salzburg in June 2010. We are not seeing the passion play but would love to be based in either Mittenwald or Hohenschwangua for a few days. Our girls will be 10 and 16 next year and do not mind sharing a double bed. A double bed is also fine for my husband and I. My husband lived in Germany as a child and always stayed in guesthouses on vacation. Since it is 4 of us we will make reservations ahead of time. Any recommendations for a place to stay? Which town would you prefer? We love nature and views and are not big touristy or shopping people.
We will visit Zugspitze, maybe Oberammergau (if not too busy), the castles, Garmish, and possibly lake Constance and swiss alps from this location. Any other places we should see while based here? We love action things (zip lines, luges, etc)
We will also base ourselves in Berchtesgaden for a few days.

If you will have a car you might be interested in a farm stay. Some farms have rooms while others also have furnished apartments. The prices are reasonable, too. We stayed on a farm near Lake Chiemsee two years ago and my daughter, then 10, loved the animals and the trampoline.

Perhaps it would be helpful to let you know we are renting a car. We are flying in and out of Munich and will probably make this the first stop of our vacation. We will drive from the airport (a.m. arrival from the states) and drive to our first destination for a day of rest due to the time change.
We have not decided the best amount of days-- but probably 14 days total. Maybe 6 nights here, 6 nights in Berchtesgaden and last night in Munich. We are open to any other suggestions.
Thanks again
Stephanie and family

Thanks for the quick reply. I was writing my response as you were. Would you mind sharing the name of the farm you stayed at near lake Chemsee. Would you stay there again? This is one of our definate stops. My husband learned how to sail on lake Chemsee and would like to take our family sailing on the lake if we can rent a sailboat.
thanks again--I can%26#39;t wait

In that case look for a place that does tandem paragliding, you%26#39;ll love it. The pilot flies the chute while you are the passenger, nothing like running off the side of a mountain! In Europe I%26#39;ve only done it in Interlaken, Switzerland, but I%26#39;m sure other places in the Alps also do it. I believe it%26#39;s also possible to do canyoning, I know a few years back several people were killed in Austria doing this, so now it might be more restricted. I believe that there is also a place on Lake Constance that specializes in aerial activities, perhaps pick up some free tourist brochures on the area when you are there, perhaps Wild- und Freizeitpark Bodanrueck is the one I%26#39;m thinking of ( www.wildundfreizeitpark.de ).

Hi mjduncan,
I can recommend a place in Mittenwald which we stayed twice.
The Pension Schwalbennestl is a nice place with great views overlooking Mittenwald and the mountains.
www.schwalbennestl.de
The website is in German yet you can email in English.
We love staying at the Pension Mayringerlehen in Ramsau which is 10 minutes from Berchtesgaden. We stayed here twice also and are staying again later this year. After 6 trips to Bavaria, Austria and the Italian Dolomites, it%26#39;s our favorite place anywhere.

The cost of rooms is very reasonable (cheap) and you could actually consider getting two rooms. Both have appartments also.

oops I just re-read my post its Hohenschwangau--I wrote it wrong twice no less--sorry
Thanks for the awesome responses--I really enjoyed the trip reports and the looks of your favorite place to stay in Ramsau. Not very many of the apartments to rent for 4 are rated on trip advisor. Also it is not very easy to narrow down which places would be good for a family of 4. I do not mind the girls having there own room but I would feel more comfortable knowing their room was near us. My husband has been google searching apartments in the towns we are interested in but that leaves out some great out of the way places that we usually love. Since we have our own car we do not have to be staying in a town.
Thanks again

We stayed at the Gabrielhof in Seeon, on the north side of Lake Chiemsee. Yes, I would stay there again. The hosts spoke zero English but were very friendly. We had a suite of two rooms, one with a double bed and one with bunk beds, plus a bathroom and shower. Price was a whopping 19 Euros per person per night including breakfast. The only thing some people might find negative, in my opinion, is that farms have different smells and noises from suburbs. Also there was no tv or wifi. Check the website www.bauernhof-urlaub.com for lots of interesting farms - if you click on the British flag in the corner you%26#39;ll get the English version.
