which spas to stop by on the way to Prague from Munich

We%26#39;ll be driving with two teenage daughters from Munich to Prague at the end of August. Any recommendations on the spas along the route. Looking for both, historical/architecural interest as well as %26#39;beaches%26#39;.

There are no beaches between Prague and Munich, lest you think of lakes. However, if you don%26#39;t mind taking a 170km detour between Plzn (Pilsen)and the German border, you would enjoy Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) and Marianski Lazne (Marienbad), both for their location and ambiance. You woule be heading from Plzn on route 20 to K.V, and then on Rt. 24 to M-L. They are about 50km from each other. Then you would return to the Prague- Plzn - Wernberg-Koeblitz autobahn (A-8 in Germany) and the A-93 south to Regensburg and Munich.

In K.V., we stayed couple of nights at the entrally located Hotel Dvorak and were well satisfied. The Hotel Pup is the top hotel, a true European Grand Dame. Your teenagers will get a kick out of wandering the promenades with their special cups for the thermal waters in hand, watching the Russian ladies taking their waters and (mostly) sitting in the sun.

There is the Therme Erding %26quot;Europe%26#39;s biggest thermal water world – an exotic pool paradise with a soothing vitality oasis and bathing beneath palm trees%26quot;

Strictly seen on the way between Munich and Prague. But actually just outside of Munich.

In and around Munich you%26#39;ll find also many lakes you can swim in.

Karlovy Vary is quite a big detour if you are coming from Munich. Just be careful when finding somewhere to park in KV if you go there (and of course Prague - that goes without saying - try not to take a car near the centre of Prague, or any other Czech city, for that matter - you%26#39;ll find out why if you do :) ). The local police are watchful for foreign cars, especially German ones - indeed I believe the Germans made an official complaint about this, but I don%26#39;t know what difference it made.

Plzeň itself is a very nice place with a beautiful main square, and is, of course, home to arguably the best beer in the world (but as you will be driving you will be unable to partake...)

Another place just off the road into Prague (for which you will need an obligatory highway sticker - buy at the border) is Karlštejn castle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl%C5%A1tejn which is always popular. Also Hořovice http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ho%C5%99ovice, Stříbro en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St%C5%99%C3%ADbro

If it is a spa you want, that is not too far off the route, there is a beer spa (!) in Chodová Planá www.chodovar.cz/id140en-nazor-lekare.htm which is about 12 miles north of the highway where it is intersected by route number 21 - may people swear by it, or for something more conventional, Mariánské Lázně is a couple of miles north of that.

Thanks for the useful info.

I really wanted my family to experience European lake %26amp; riversides. Eventhough we are from Canada, living on the shores of Lake Ontario, I believe that this type of experience in Germany or the Chech R. would be distinctly different and memorable. Since we will only have 3-4 days Munich %26amp; 3 days in Prague, would you suggest that we explore the German side or go south east towards Prague?

|||

In that case, we are definitely heading to KV, lest we miss seeing the Russian ladies :)

|||

From Munich to Prague you need to go north east - if you go south east you end up in Austria. Karlovy Vary is even further north - about a 40 mile detour from the main road.

Take a look on Google Earth - you can get a better idea that way!

Fantastic info - thanks, esp for the city of Munich tourism link, which lists everything from lakes to antique shopping.
