Cochem has been recommended to me for a day trip from Cologne. Can anyone tell me what there is to do there? I was told to go there because I am looking for a small town where I can experience the wine region but do not want to get there and be clueless on where to go and how to spend my day. Any help would be wonderful!

Cochem is a wonderfull quaint town on the Mossel. I have stayed in the town a few times and never run out of things to do
Have a look at the towns web site

I would also recommend that you try the small chair lift to a hill overlooking the town, its a bit shaky but well worth the trip.
Have a walk up to the castle and have a guided tour, bit steep but worth the walk.
Lots of boat trips on the Mossel ranging from a one hour trip to Bilstein to an all day cruise down the Rhein.
There is a lot of wine for sale and you can easily walk over the bridge and up amongst the vinyards. Again my favourite wine tour is with a place called

Just walk over the bridge and its the first building on the LH side. They do a wine tour and tasting session fo 6 euro and you get to taste 5 wines along with a free bottle of table wine. We thought the table wine was good but look out for the Spatlase in the blue bottle, we always end up with a box to bring home.
There are lots of excellent restaurants and prices have always been good value.
I would also have a look around the town and enjoy

Your interest in wine might call for a stay with a vintner. Haven%26#39;t stayed here myself but have heard good comments about the Rademacher winery, which is VERY close in and near the train station.

Good suggestions above. I%26#39;d further recommend seeing the falconry exhibition at Cochem%26#39;s Reichsburg castle at 11:00, 13:00, 14:30, and 16:00; see photos here:

Rick Steve%26#39;s guide to Germany recommends Burg Eltz (his favorite castle in all of Europe). That%26#39;s one thing we plan to do near Cochem.

we won%26#39;t be staying the night in Cochem just visiting from Cologne for the day.
We will be taking the train from Cologne and were told this would be the best place to see a small town and visit a winery. We aren%26#39;t interested in doing a river cruise so the train is the best way for us. When we take the train from Cologne are there other places we should stop on our way to or back from Cochem? Also, how do we find out the train schedule so we plan this excursion?
Thanks!

Link for train information. Just type in Koln to Cochem for timetable and costs. Looks like about a 2 hour ride each way (little less acutally).
Cochem is a nice change from Koln. Very quiet, definitely in wine country. I prefer Bernkastel-Kues or Piesport but Cochem is a nice visit from Koln. Spend the day walking the town, have a coffee and pastry overlooking the Mosel, hike up to the castle if you like and take in the beauty of the Mosel, do some wine tasting..nice day.
