I am planning to visit Germany in September of this year and have been looking for information regarding billeting and use of Commissary and BX while in Germany.
Just found out that the SOFA does not cover retirees in Germany if they are visiting for less than 30 days and that a retire does not have access to the Commissary or BXs. Is this right?
Would really appreciate any help in this matter.

It is my understanding that we (retirees) are not covered by SOFA and therefore can not use the PX or Commissary. A number of bases have closed in any case. It is hard to find current information.
Edelweis lodge takes retirees:

There is evidently still a Kaiserlautern Military Community that you can contact:

You are correct about not being able to use the PX or Commissary. In fact you may not be able to get on base without having a base access card. Some of the hotels are not on the base itself, like in Wiesbaden, so you could still use those. Honestly though, you can have much cheaper rooms and with better atmosphere in the hotels and B%26amp;B%26#39; in town rather than the military billets. Edelwiess is lovely, but it still was more expensive then many of the places in town. Your only advantage - you can use dollars there. Why come to Europe though if you are going to spend it surrounded by Americans?
