We%26#39;re on an early morning fly into Munich and are spending our first 2 nights in Salzburg. I%26#39;ve searched this forum, but am still confused on the best way to get to Salzburg. Is there a train from Munich airport that will take us directly there or do we need to go into Munich and get a train from there? Also what is the best ticket to get?
Any help greatly appretiated!

There%26#39;s no direct train from the airport to Salzburg, you will therefore have to take the S-Bahn to Munich, either S1 to Munich central station (Hauptbahnhof) to change to the new Railjet to Salzburg, or S8 to Munich east (Ostbahnhof) to change to the Eurocity or the regional train (takes a bit longer, less then 30 minutes, but you could use the Bayernticket for the whole trip). Hope that helps.

There are no direct trains from Munich airport to Salzburg. You need to take train S8 or S1 (the first one is quicker) to Hauptbahnhot (main rail tation) and from there take direct train to Salzburg. The quicker one takes about 1 hour and a half, the slower (and cheaper) about 2 hrs. It is cheaper to buy a group ticket (up to 5 passengers). The train information is on www.db.de

Thanks, so is it only the S8 we can use the Bayern ticket on?
|||
No. You can use the Bayern-Ticket to get to Salzburg as long you stick to regional trains (S-Bahn, RB, RE).
Just check with the DB timetable for connections
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: MUC
To: Salzburg
and select as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot;. Than the timetable will only show trains you can use with the Bayern Ticket.

I see there is a %26quot;10 minute walk%26quot; at Munchen Hbf when taking the S1 Munchen Ost to Salzburg via Railjet.
Since we will be pulling some luggage, is this a big deal? The schedule states 11 minutes between arrival and departure.

There are plenty of direct trains from Munich Ost to Salzburg. Why has it to be a Railjet train which does not stop there?
Munich Ost to Munich Hbf by S-Bahn, than Railjet from Munich Hbf via Munich Ost (albeit not stopping there) to Salzburg.
If you want more time to change at Munich Hbf just take any earlier S-Bahn. All 7 S-Bahn lines serve this relation, thus you have a train every few minutes.

Munich Ost = Ostbahnhof on this map
The S-Bahn trains stop at the underground S-Bahn station at Munich Hbf. From there you have go up (there are escalators and lifts) to the main track hall for the Railjet train to Salzburg. As a newbie you should calculate 10 minutes for this. Counting the tracks Munich Hbf is the 3rd biggest train station on this planet.
Please note that the Bavaria Ticket does not cover Railjet or EC trains to Salzburg.

I do understand that there are many other options, just did not want to make the wrong one since this is our first time to Munich.
We arrive at Munich airport 8:00. Taking into consideration we are newbies, and will be navigating through immigration, etc., what would be a reasonable (not break-neck) train departure time? I%26#39;m guessing 10:00?
|||
If you%26#39;re through immigration you buy your train ticket and hop on the next S-Bahn (S1 or S8 - plays no role). And at Munich Hbf or Ost you hop on the next train to Salzburg.
You don%26#39;t have to book anything or so.
What you can do is to ask the DB timetable for train connections starting from 9am on from Munich Airport to Salzburg and print the overview of the next few connections out and take it with you. Just for your information.

Day1, don%26#39;t worry there%26#39;s not much you can do wrong on the connection from Munich to Salzburg. As Abalada said, take the first S-Bahn you can get and then the next train from Munich east to Salzburg. If you miss one just take the next and in the meantime get some coffee and some nice Bretzl in the food court of the station and enjoy your trip!
