To explore the countryside a rental car is advisable. Esp. for a family with small children.

In the big cities it%26#39;s however rather a hassle. There you are more flexible with public transport and this will be also cheaper. Alone the parking fees are higher than a mini group day ticket for public transport in most cases.

Thus a mix is most likely the best.

E.g. you could stay for some days at the begin or end of your trip in Munich without a car.

Agreed for this kind of trip. However, rental car thru Hertz.com or some other worldwide chain will be somewhat expensive. You will have an expense of at least 60 EUR per day for the car + fuel.

Hi,

Check out www.gemut.com for a price on rental car. We used them last year on our trip starting in Frankfurt and ending in Munich. They have an 800# (toll free) to call if you like. They are very helpful and have very good rates.

Hi Nandoo

We are in a similar situation to you. Off to Germany in August and looking for car hire.

Did you resolve the situation? Any tips?

Thx

If you wish to discover these small villages then you will need a car. If you wish to stay near a main city then you may consider a train. When you live in Munich you think theres sooo much traffic... but when you return to Munich from say London or Auckland you realise Munich traffic is no hassle at all.
