Driving from Paris-Zurich-Munich and back to Paris

We will be spending some time in Paris before we drive over to Zurich and Munich with a day trip to Salzburg. We want to take half a day to drive back towards Paris from Munich.

Does anyone know of a place we could stay for the night (either in Switzerland or on the fringe of entering France), so we don%26#39;t have to drive the same route back again. OR is it better to just drive all the way back from Munich to Paris in one day, so we would not have to stay overnight somewhere else?

Mapquest has about a 7.5 hour drive from Munich to Paris (long day). The route goes right through Strasbourg which looks like a good middle point. Have only been there once years ago, so others would have to help with what to do once you get there :)

Thank you for your quick reply. I will consider Strasbourg on my itinerary.

Driving through Switzerland is out of your way. The A8 autobahn will take you past Stuttgart to Karlsruhe where you can choose to cross the Rhine there to bypass Strasbourg, or then take the A5 autobahn south to go via Strasbourg. If you do the latter, you could also consider staying in the spa town of Baden-Baden. Also, west of Strasbourg are the Vosges Mountains and you could stay in a small French town such as Saverne.

Driving information such as routes, times, distances and costs can be found at www.viamichelin.com .

...dont just rely on estimates on eg google maps or whatever for driving times.. during the week autobahns in the area you are in are notoriously busy with especially eastern european trucks meaning you wont always have the luxury of proper speeds... and if you drive thru switzerland you need to buy a motorway pass which may not be woth your while if switzerland is mainly to be a drive thru thing... stay off the motorways and enjoy the ride... otherwsie you wont see much...

Thank you for your feedback. We were thinking about driving from Munich to Strasbourg and stay overnight there.

Thanks for your feeback on where to drive from Munich. We might just drive straight from Munich to Strasbourg and see what sites come up along the way. We will stay there for one night and then drive over to Paris the next morning.

Some excellent places to visit in Baden-Wuerttemberg heading west:

Ulm ( www.ulm.de ) with its cathedral with the world record height spire, climbable if desired

Blaubeuren (probably www.blaubeuren.de ), pleasant town of the Swabian Alb with a monastery by the Blautopf (deep blue pool, the drowned mouth of a cave, the source of the Blau (Blue) River

Fossil Musuem Hauff (Urweltmuseum Hauff- www.urweltmuseum.de ), with the excellent fossils from the local fossil quarries with many excellent marine dinosaurs, in Holzmaden by Aichelberg after descending the Alb

Esslingen ( www.esslingen.de ), with its well preserved medieval center

Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ), with the excellent Mercedes Benz and Porsche Museums

It might be a good idea to take A81 south from Stuttgart and then continue to Calw ( www.calw.de , a nice town) through the Black Forest to Baden-Baden to avoid traffic jams caused by construction, or cross it further south.

If you head south from Stuttgart on the freeway Hwy27 you can visit the lovely town of Tuebingen ( www.tuebingen.de ) or fairytale-like Hohenzollern Castle ( www.burg-hohenzollern.com)

If you continue on the A8, UNESCO Maulbronn Monastery (in www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de ) north of Pforzheim is the best preserved medieval monastery north of the Alps.

Scloss Favorite (in www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de )is a nice palace by Rastatt.

The spa town of Baden-Baden

Thank you so much for your feedback. I will have a lot of planning ahead for our trip.

I would like you opinion as well on another matter.

I was planning on driving from Paris to Zurich, but now I am thinking about driving towards Bern instead. We coulld stay one night in Bern and another night in Zurich before driving to Munich. Can you give me some feedback on this?? I want a better direct route to drive from Paris.

Bern and Zuerich are less than a 100km apart so it doesn%26#39;t make much difference which you drive to. Personally, I would drive either to Interlaken and enjoy the two lakes and/or the gorgeous Bernese Oberland mountains, or Luzern. When I travel to Switzerland, it is mainly for the Alps, not towns. In your short time you will have little time to see anything, but the drives from Interlaken to Grindelwald and Stechelberg are excellent and there are many ways to access the peaks of the Alps in this region. However, Bern is an excellent place to visit on a rainy day, with its arcades, so you won%26#39;t get wet.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, I would like to ask a futher question.

I will also be driving from Paris to Munich and need to do this with a max of 2 overnight stops. We will be leaving Paris on the morning of Dec 21st

So far i have two possible routes planned :

1) Paris Trier, Trier Rothenburg ob der Tauber, then to munich

2) Paris to Riquewihr - 2 nights in Riquewirh or Kaysersberg or simeilar, then to Munich.

Marcopolko, you seem to know these routes pretty well. What would you recommend in December to try and avoid traffic and not to kill me with tiredness?

Thanks in advance for any answers.
