autumn in southern germany

does the Black Forest or the Alps have the beautiful changing leaf colors that we get in some parts of the states? we%26#39;ll be there end of Sept. and first part of Oct.also how cold is it around lake Constance,Fussen and then farther north to Frankfurt area?

The Black Forest owes its name to the dark green fir trees that used to largely cover it, so no Fall color there, but there are also some deciduous trees. The Fall color will never be similar to the NE US as there just not that many maple trees which give the best color. It%26#39;s almost impossible to predict when or if there will be any Fall color, each year is different. Sometimes the Fall color is basically brown of the dead leaves that never colored, other years there may be yellows and oranges and lesser reds. A few years ago we had some excellent Fall color, but after a heavy rain it disappeared as the colored leafs all fell from the trees overnight. A good area for Fall color is the Swabian Alb ( www.schwaebischealb.de my favorite area of Germany) with its low mountains, many castles and caves, and excellent cliffside scenery and a largely deciduous forest. It%26#39;s the mountain range just to the east of the Black Forest.

Some useful websites:

www.baden-wuerttemberg.de Baden-Wuerttemberg

www.tourismus-bw.de Baden-Wuerttemberg tourism

www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de for the excellent castles, palaces, monasteries and gardens operated by this German state

www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info Black Forest tourism

www.schwaebischealb.de Swabian Alb tourism

www.bodensee-tourismus.com Lake Constance tourism

The temperatures will probably vary from warm to cool, with always the possibility of rain any time of year. It probably will be too early for the excellent Fall color of some vineyards.

In the high valleys of the Alps there is a lot of larch trees, which turn bright gold in autumn (late october/early november depending on altitude). Karwendel massif (above Mittenwald) as well as many high valleys of Austria and eastern Switzerland are quite known for the larch colours.
