We are picking up a car on our last day in Paris and driving through the Loire Valley, Switzerland, Bavarian Region, Salzburg, and ending in Munich. We will have the car for a total of 17 days and find the daily rental cost to be much lower for this time period vs. train/flying.
Has anyone had any experience in avoiding the penalty (200 EUR) for picking up in one country (France) and dropping off in another (Germany in this case)?
Thank you for your help!

You could try to hit the Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg area. Dropping the car on the French site and renting a car in Germany (e.g. in Freiburg or Lörrach) for the rest of your trip.

Hello fellow citizen of Colorado Springs!
While you might be lucky of getting a %26quot;re-patriatian%26quot; (sp.?) car ,like you sometimes can get to or from Florida, it%26#39;s taking an awful chance.
One option I would check: Is it possible to LEASE a car for 17 days, starting in France and dropping it off in Germany. Renault has such a factory lease program, ( and other manufacturerers do too, too) but I don%26#39;t know if it is for as short a period as 17 days, whether you can drop the car off in another country and whether the overall costs are much less. Generally, these lease programs are advantageous when you want a car for 4 weeks or more, exceeding the 3-week period that you can rent a car.
Otherwise. do your travel in France and drop the car off in France near the German border; take a train across the border to the nearest German city that has rental car agencies; drive to Switzerland, Austria and return the car in Munich. Strassbourg might be an option.
